    Pinzon Contemporary 8-Cup Coffee Press

    by Amazon (1-114-8C)

    $50 $19.99
  • Brews 32 ounces of coffee; retains beans' oils for rich, complex flavor
  • Contemporary, mirror-finish frame and lid; heat-resistant glass carafe
  • Stainless-steel press mechanism; turn lid to close spout
  • Use 1 rounded tablespoon of coarsely ground coffee per 4-ounce cup
  • Hand-wash with soap and warm water; approximately 8 inches high
  • customer review: The Short:
If you do not have one, and want one, go with Bodum.

If you have a press pot and you're shopping around; this is a poor series of design flaws.
    Avoid it.

    The Long:
I use press pots and have for years now. I am an avid tea, tisanes, and occasional coffee drinker. These do the job and do it well, even with the flaws I found this one usable for my purposes, but overall it is a failure and should be avoided.

It is a classic press pot, but this one is made for looks and not use. It even fails at that, in that it is average looking at best. It is almost an artistic design in irony, because it is a collection of flaws of press pot past.

The handle, base, holder are tightly attached to the carafe all one piece and have a kind of vulcanized coating to protect from heat. The handle has a twist at the top making it difficult to use your left hand if you are a lefty. The vulcanized coating has an odd aroma for a week or two as well. Not quite rubber, more like a child's toy that became a microwave oven experiment.

Cleanup is the worst, an absolute nightmare. The three part design is held in by one pin, you need to unscrew this small pin to get at and clean the filters. The pin is small, rounded and easily lost. Without it you no longer have a press pot but an expensive stein/carafe. What is more, removing it takes two agile hands. Any disability or if you're not good with tiny objects and you'll need third party help. The base does not separate easily from the carafe and the bottom collects everything easily, it seems made to do so. Moisture, dripping, grounds on the counter, it all gets in there and is on display through the carafe.

I could go on and on but the above is already enough to avoid it.

The second star is because it is functional. You can use it as a press pot. It does the job. Just don't expect this one to last the years like your trusty Bodum does. Did I mention avoid this product?

    Bodum Chambord 8-Cup Coffee Press

    by Bodum (1928-16US6)

    $54 $31.99
  • Brews 32 ounces of coffee; retains beans' oils for rich, complex flavor
  • Sturdy, chrome-plated brass frame; easy-to-clean glass carafe
  • Stainless-steel press mechanism; replacement parts available
  • Turn lid to close spout; not for stovetop use
  • All parts are dishwasher-safe
  • customer review: Bodum is the best of the best when it comes to French Press coffee makers. Construction is very solid and nothing is rickety or cheap. The glass used for the press is laboratory grade, hand-blown glass, and is very durable, although you need to use a non-metal spoon to stir the grounds. Although it's a little more expensive, Bodum is an investment you'll be glad you made. If you're going to be making more than 1 cup of coffee a week, Bodum is the best value you'll find.

    AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker

    by Aerobie (80R08)

    $30 $24.5
  • Total immersion of the grounds in the water results in rapid yet robust extraction of flavor
  • Because of the lower temperature and short brew time, the acid level of the brew is much lower than conventional brewers.
  • Micro-filtered coffee so pure and particle-free that it can be stored for days as a concentrate.
  • AeroPress is chamber is nearly self-cleaning. A 10-second rinse of the plunger is all that's required.
  • Compact, perfect for camping.
  • customer review: I have used my AeroPress for maybe four years now and just purchased a new one for a favorite niece for Christmas. I originally bought mine because it got reviews for making good coffee and was small and nonbreakable so I travelled with it in my RV. I tried to keep things simple in the RV and the hockey-puck grounds ejection made clean-up easy.

I no longer have the RV, so my AeroPress has become the daily staple in the kitchen. I have to say that it is made well because it still functions perfectly after 4 years of use. I use it throughout the day for very fresh coffee a cup at a time. We also have a fine Rancilio espresso machine and a Bodum french press. High quality coffee beans are critical to getting good coffee from any of them and I love them all. But I use the AeroPress more because I can make just a cup. Also, it is perfectly fresh. When I walk away from the french press for 4 minutes, I often get distracted and come back for coffee much later. With the AeroPress, I measure my water into a Pyrex measuring cup and microwave it for my perfect time. If I walk off from that, I can come back and reheat it for a minute and am sipping fresh coffee within a minute and a half.

One minor negative? I seem to always have the AeroPress parts drying on my drainboard so my kitchen never has that perfect Martha Stewart look. The good news is that it is always ready for the next cup. But in my fantasy world, the parts would be smaller, dry instantly, and store out of sight in a second.

I liked the cold brew results so well I drank it black - normally I add milk to my coffee. I am trying a second cold brew with the same ground coffee beans we just used. If it works we have doubled our yield. So far - I would recommend this product and am glad we purchased it ourself.

BonJour Hugo 8-Cup Unbreakable French Press, Black

    by BonJour (53397)

    $19.99 $19.95
  • 8-cup French press makes 32 ounces of fresh brewed coffee
  • Unbreakable polycarbonate carafe great for picnics
  • Rubberized, comfort-grip handle; plastic lid and frame
  • Stainless-steel filter rod and screen; mesh lid removes extra sediment
  • Microwavable when lid and metal parts removed
  • customer review: I bought this product approximately 2 months ago and the screen housing is already broken. I first attempted to email the manufacturer via their website, but the "Send" button was mysteriously disabled...from 2 different PCs! Imagine that!

I then attempted to call the 800 number listed on their website, and each time I got to the last selection where I might get an actual person, their system hung up on me.

I'll be replacing this product with a Bodum, which I should have purchased in the first place.

    Bodum Chambord 12-Ounce Coffee Press

    by Bodum (1923-16)

    $40 $27.5
  • Brews 12 ounces of coffee; retains beans' oils for rich, complex flavor
  • Sturdy, chrome-plated brass frame; easy-to-clean glass carafe
  • Stainless-steel press mechanism; replacement parts available
  • Turn lid to close spout; not for stovetop use
  • All parts are dishwasher safe
  • customer review: It looks nice.

It doesn't press coffee all the way into the bottom, thus leaving the brew a bit weak and wasteful of ground coffee.

It is over rated considering the high price.

Senseo HD7832 Supreme Single-Serve Gourmet Coffeemaker with LCD Display, Silver

    by Senseo (HD7832/55)

    $139.99 $128.88
  • Single-serving gourmet coffeemaker with interactive LCD display
  • Multiple serving sizes up to 10 ounces; uses premeasured coffee pods
  • Removable 32-ounce water reservoir; adjustable spout for different mug sizes
  • Water-level indicator lights; dishwasher-safe parts; coffee pods included
  • Measures approximately 13-1/2 by 12 by 8-1/2 inches includes $30 Bonus Gourmet Coffee Kit
  • customer review: After having tried Senseo HD7832 Supreme Single-Serve Gourmet Coffeemaker with LCD Display, Silver and both the Breville and Keurig, Supreme models, I am thrilled to have finally found a great one cup coffeemaker. The coffee pods are cheaper than the K cups, but not only that, you can insert 2 pods for stronger or a larger cup of coffee.

With the K cups for the other machines, you use the same amount of grounds for the small to xlarge cup, and it's just too weak. I never thought that made sense. The Senseo also takes up less counter space and it works faster than advertised. Would I buy it again? Absolutely!

Hamilton Beach 47665 BrewStation Plus 12-Cup Automatic Drip Coffeemaker

    by Hamilton Beach (47665)

    $49.99
  • 12-cup coffeemaker with enclosed brewing system and no need for a carafe
  • 1-handed dispensing; brew-pause function; thermal-lined insulation
  • Programmable for "wake-up" coffee; simple push-button controls
  • 2-hour auto shut-off; digital clock/timer; removable water tank; drip tray
  • Measures 6 by 8 by 17 inches; 1-year warranty
  • customer review: I had to replace my Kitchenaid drip coffee maker and consulted Consumer Reports website to aid me in purchasing another. Despite my remote location overseas, the BX carried this recommended model and it seemed better than the Cuisenart with a carafe (which my store only had in white). Anyway, I was skeptical that it was only $50...and I was right, you get what you pay for -- there are literally no bells or whistles (which I didn't realize I relied on so much). There is no signal to tell you when the coffee is done brewing, or when it is going to shut off (nor a visible way to see how long it's been sitting, like my Kitchen Aid). While I do like that the coffee seems nice and hot and there is no burner to scorch the pot of coffee, the machine is bulky and there is no easy way to pull it out from under the cabinet to fill it (nothing to grab but the whole machine!). The large lid opens at the top, and doesn't clear the counter above it, so I have to awkwardly, but ever so carefully, shove the bulky thing to the back of the counter while it is full of water. There are warnings all over the place saying to only use 3/4 T coffee per cup to avoid overflow...so if you like full flavored or strong coffee (normally you use at least 1 T), you'd have to make less than 12 cups. I like the idea of dispensing piping hot coffee one cup at a time (my Kitchen Aid didn't really keep my coffee hot, till it scorched the last cup or so of coffee), but the design and features of this machine leave much to be desired. While not a huge deal, the hour and minute button change the clock's time if you accidently press one when wiping down the machine (they could have easily avoided that by having a switch for clock and program). I've only had it a few days, and so far it does not leak, but the lack of features and fear of overflow/leaking have left me annoyed. I will continue to search for the ideal coffee maker (maybe a thermal pot?). I'm very disappointed that Consumer Reports recommended this thing...what were they thinking?! I should have trusted my gut and avoided Hamilton Beach product, but this got good reviews on Amazon as well. :( I guess most people like inconveniently made, weak coffee??

Bodum Columbia 8-Cup Stainless-Steel Thermal Press Pot

    by Bodum (1308-16)

    $107 $78.95
  • French press makes coffee directly in thermos
  • Holds 34-ounces, nearly seven 5-ounce cups
  • Keeps coffee hot for two hours
  • Made of stainless-steel polished to mirror-finish
  • Safe to use in dishwasher
  • customer review: I've used french presses for years. But this news junkie wants more than one cup in the morning and the second cup from a regular press is disappointingly lukewarm. (Nuking it destroys the flavor!) I thought this sleek-looking stainless version might do the trick instead of shifting coffee to a thermos right after making it in the glass press. The claim this press will keep coffee hot for 2 hours is simply preposterous, but I'd take even a half hour. This pretty little gizmo truly doesn't keep the coffee any hotter than a glass carafe, even when you pre-warm it. At $80 it flat out should be a miracle, since you can get a top of the line thermos for less than that. My advice? Save your money and get a regular press.

Frieling 0103 5-6 Cup French Press

    by Frieling (103)

    $75 $59.95
  • 18/10 stainless-steel, double-wall construction keeps coffee or tea warm after brewing
  • Full-length handle is comfortable in the hand
  • All-steel mesh plunger easily pushes down coarse coffee grounds or loose tea leaves
  • Also works as a pitcher for hot or cold beverages
  • Measures 8-5/8 inches tall; disassembles for dishwasher or hand washing
  • customer review: My wife and I are very happy with this press. It is built like a tank except for the weak link which is where the stem mates with the plunger. I actually had to return the first one because this part had stripped threads. Amazon shipped out a replacement overnight and the second one is flawless. The press makes excellent coffee when used in combination with a conical burr grinder. The burr grinder is necessary to get a coarse grind so the grounds will be strained out by the metal screen. Due to the fact that this is solid metal it is a good idea to warm it up before you use it. We just put hot water out of the tap and leave it in there while the coffee water is heating in the microwave. This does the trick and we have had excellent results with this method. I'm glad I didn't get a glass one because I have already clanked it against the sink a couple of times and thought, " If this was glass, I may have just broken it". You have my recommendation to go ahead and but it. Plus, the stainless steel looks great on the counter next to the other appliances.

Bodum 8-Cup Glass Beaker for Presses

    by Bodum (1508-10)

    $14.95
  • "BODUM" REPLACEMENT BEAKER
  • Holds up to 8 cups
  • Clear glass
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Glass Beaker for Presses
  • customer review: The descriptions of these replacement beakers is inconsistent and make ordering a challenge. Some confuse U.S. and European cups while others list "ounces." Total capacity in ounces should be listed as well as dimensions in inches. If a customer has broken his or her beaker that information may not be available so the Bodum product numbers should also be provided. All this information is available on the Bodum website but is hard to transpose elsewhere. As it is, if a mistake is made the customer must pay the postage for the return as well as for any followup order. In the meantime your otherwise excellent press is "beakerless" and unusable.

Planetary Design Double Shot Travel French Press Mug Black

    by Planetary Designs

  • Double-walled 18/8 stainless steel and vacuum-sealed for optimum heat retention
  • Includes extra storage container for enough coffee/tea for 2 additional cups
  • 14 oz. capacity with extra lid to convert to conventional mug
  • customer review: Although this mug is technically a French press for coffee, I use it all the time with loose leaf tea, and it's perfect! Double screens make sure you don't get any tea leave or coffee bean bits in your mouth! Only downfall is that the French press lid is not spill-proof, so be careful! I love the extra compartment for storing more tea or coffee for later. Excellent idea...and it still fits in the car cup holder!
