A few years ago it died and my family has had several since(a different model than the original and the newest). But this new model is terrible, my mom's the gray pour handle fell out of it and mine when it heats the water everything gets this awful metal taste. Come on Sunbeam this is really sad.

Capresso 259.03 H2O Plus Glass Water Kettle, Polished Chrome

    by Capresso (259.03)

    $100 $59
  • Cordless glass water kettle lifts easily from 360-degree swivel base

  • Concealed heating element; auto shut-off upon boiling for added safety
  • Generous handle with slip-free, textured underside ensures a secure grip
  • Measures 6-1/4 by 8 by 9 inches; 1-year limited warranty
  • customer review: All of the plastic parts have a strong chemical odor. This was reduced somewhat after sponging with soapy water, but still remains. The steam also carries the strong smell.

The odor comes not only from the external plastic parts, but is also on the inside of the lid and from the rubbery sealer inside the carafe, which comes in contact with the water.

I've tried boiling a dozen batches of water, I've tried cleaning with vinegar, and with soap. I don't know whether it will eventually go away, but really, I shouldn't *have* to worry about this. It should have been taken care of by the manufacturer.

Given safety issues with other made-in-China products, I have no confidence in this device and I'm surprised and disappointed by Capresso.

  • customer review: We bought this kettle in Jan. 08 and it is now December. We use it to heat water for tea 4-6 times/day. The kettle was great, but seems to have shorted out. It worked sporadically for about 3 days and now no longer works at all.

Rival 4071-WN 32-Ounce Hot Pot Express

    by Rival (4071-WN)

    $12.99
  • Cooks soups, noodles, mac & cheese and much more
  • Quick heating
  • 7 settings from low to high
  • Nonstick interior surface wipes clean with soap and water
  • 1-year warranty
  • customer review: This pot gets great reviews, but I didn't like it. If you don't dry out the inside of the pot thoroughly after each use, the area where the nonstick surface meets the plastic will quickly develop a ring of rust. Also, if you try to open the pot when there is any water in it, the lid is so tight that it splashes out.
I returned mine....but if you order one, my best advice is to keep the inside dry. I can see where this would be great for camping or dorm use.

    Chef's Choice 677 Cordless Electric 1-3/4-Quart Teakettle

    by Chef's Choice (677)

    $49.99 $48.99

  • Concealed heating element eliminates build-up of mineral deposits
  • Automatic shut-off, boil-dry safety protection, and secure locking lid
  • Brushed stainless steel housing; water-level gauge; cord storage
  • Measures 9 by 7-1/2 by 10 inches; 1-year limited warranty
  • customer review: I bought the Chef's Choice for its size and speed at heating water - which the product does do. What I did not expect was the handle to detach from the base of the unit - creating a job for Gorilla glue - which did not work either. So, each time we pick up the unit (as in the picture) the handle separates from the unit creating moments of anticipation - wondering when it will come apart once and for all.

This is my second Chef's Choice water boiler, and my last. The first unit (entirely different model but still Chef's Choice) worked wonderfully for a year. Due to design flaws, the boiler works when it wants - not when I need it.

The unit is beautiful, and holds a gallon of water. This is enough to get us through the day without refilling.

We will be looking elsewhere for our next kettle and other appliances, as well.

it shut several computers down in his work area. He had to bring it

fantastic job boiling our tea water. Just make sure you plug it in

  • customer review: I did so much research on the tea kettles that Amazon offers before I purchased one. I had an old Russell Hobbs that I loved and died after a good six years. I love the look of the Chef's Choice 685 and was pleased with other reviews so I ordered it on Christmas eve and it arrived the following Monday. I went shopping the two days after Christmas and saw so many beautiful kettles (on sale) but knew I had my own amazing and beautiful kettle on the way. Imagine my surprise when I plugged in my shiny new kettle and it didn't work?! I actually called Amazon and they could only offer me a refund because they are out of this kettle. AND, I have to get down to the post office to return it. Obviously, there are worse things but when you live in a city and are on foot it becomes a MAJOR hassle and inconvenience. I love Amazon and I love Amazon prime, but I hate the fact that I received a defective kettle when the problem is such an obvious one. It leaves me to wonder if Chef's Choice does not do any quality control. I am now in search of another Russell Hobbs!

Adagio Teas 3 UtiliTEA Variable-Temperature 30-Ounce Electric Kettle

    by Adagio Teas (3)

    $59
  • Electric stainless-steel kettle with innovative temperature-control system
  • Perfect for heating water to the right temperature for green and black teas
  • Quickly heats up to 30 ounces of water; concealed heating element
  • Cordless carafe; water-level gauge; power indicator light; flip-top lid button
  • Measures approximately 8-1/5 by 6-4/5 by 9-1/5 inches
  • customer review: The UtiliTEA is an excellent electric tea kettle-- it's comes in two parts, the base and the kettle. The base plugs in, the kettle rests on top of it. Fill it with (up to four cups) of water, fit the kettle on the base, set the dial to the desired temperature, flip the switch and moments later, you've got hot water when the switch pops back up. I've used mine endlessly since I've gotten it.

A few gripes though, the UtiliTEA's temperature gauge is color coded rather than providing any kind of numeric indication and the manual. It's easy to use, but if you needed precision (and I don't), you won't be able to get it. More irritating is no real audible indication that it's done-- the lever clicks, but there's no whistle, bell or anything else you'll notice in the other room. Good news is, it's really fast, even to bring water to a boil. A final thing I dislike-- there's no "off" switch on the base and they recommend pulling the power cord between uses. I'm not certain whether it's unsafe to leave it plugged in, but I keep pulling the plug after every use which is quite honestly annoying. Mind you, I'm a new homeowner, I'm a little paranoid about such things.

I realize my criticism is pretty harsh-- the UtiliTEA does its core competencies fantastically, and I've used this exclusively as my water heating solution, but while it's an excellent device, any potential buyer should be aware of its limitations.

    Presto 02703 Electric Tea Kettle

    by Presto (02703)

    $24.99 $17.32
  • Built-in whistle signals when water is boiling
  • Boils a quart of water even faster than a microwave
  • Large no-drip spout makes filling and pouring easy
  • Flip-up stainless steel lid directs steam away from hands while pouring
  • Shuts off for safety if boils dry; 7 by 6-1/2 inches
  • customer review: We've had our Presto Model 0270303 electric tea pot for years. No problems. It really does heat a quart of water faster than a micorwave. In fact, it heats faster than on the stove. The short cord is a satety feature, and not a complaint for me. The lack of a shut off switch is a positive to me as switches are usually the first part to fail on an electrical appliance (note, as the cord IS the shut off switch, it will spark at the recepaicle when unplugged). It does have a metal bottom, but we set our kettle on a trivet, and have had no rust problems. My only complaint is that the whistle could be louder, but that is minor in comparison to my first of this type of tea kettle which had no whistle at all (or auto shut off that I knew of).

I did leave it plugged in after pouring out the water, and thus it boiled dry once. When it did that, it made popping noises, and that alerted me to my error. I unplugged it immediately, let it cool down, and heated another pot of water as a test. It worked as before. I can't be sure the auto shut off worked, and I wonder what would have happened if I had left it plugged in and walked away. Don't know.

I wouldn't trade our kettle for one with a switch, but I would be tempted if I could get one with a temperature control.

    Sunbeam Hot Shot Beverage Machine

    by Sunbeam (3211)

    $23.99
  • Heats water from room temperature to steam point in 1 minute, 20 seconds
  • Holds up to 16 ounces of water
  • Ideal for making instant soups, tea, and hot chocolate
  • Compact design features cord storage in base
  • Auto shutoff and signal light add safety
  • customer review: The Sunbeam hot shot beverage is one of the most practical easy to use electrical items I purchased. It is also economical.
The two things I would like to know before purchasing is the capacity - 2 small cups or 1 large mug of hot water and the length of the electrical cord - 25 inches long.
Overall I think this is an excellent item to have, and is probably best for a single person or college student to have while living in the dormn.
