  • Side knob adjusts cut to desired thickness; blades slide into side slot
  • Measures 20-3/4 inches long by 8-1/4 inches wide; hand-wash; imported
  • customer review: Very nice peice if you want uniform hard veggie slices. I tested and saw 4 adjustable sizes, none of them are paper thin. The "wavy" slicer is cool if you want to make crudetts, or fry up "wavy lays pototo chips". I wanted the gaufrette option and the blades for this do not stand up to my expectations. For thin onion and potato slices fast in bulk this would be good, but if you already have a "slicer at work" forget about it. My knife skills are faster then using this except on potatoes, and onions. The construction of the "finger gaurd" is collapsable and make slicing harder. I give this 2.5 stars if you use w/out the gaurd and know when to slow down. A 4 if you just need to thin slice 1/8 inch scalloped potatoes or onions.

  • Blade, food carriage, food pusher, food deflector, and thickness guide remove for easy cleaning
  • Measures 15 by 10-1/2 by 10-4/5 inches; 1-year limited warranty
  • customer review: For me, choosing a product becomes difficult when you have hands on experience with both the commercial and household versions of a product. I look to reviews to see if the product will fit my well defined needs.

I bought this slicer to be able to make whole muscle jerky and other thinly sliced meat dishes. I generally work with raw meats and as such, the unit does the slicing and then comes apart for a thorough cleaning with relative ease.

With raw meat, getting the last little piece sliced with out slicing into the tips of the plastic holder was tricky. If the mold used to make this piece was beefed up a little (no pun intended) it would not flex when pressure was applied. This is the reason I give it a 4 instead of 5.

Presto 02970 Professional SaladShooter Electric Slicer/Shredder, White

  • Measures 11 by 4-1/4 by 8-1/2 inches; 1-year limited warranty
  • customer review: I had an early salad shooter and loved it. When using the new pro version, I realized how much better it could get. Yes, the salad shooter is missing a fine grater cone, but the new version is much easier to turn on and off. Sounds strange, but the little flip switch versus a sliding switch made a world of difference to me.

I love this device and use it for cheese, vegetables and fruit.
Watch those stringy vegetables such as celery...your knive will work better on those.
Cheese is best shredded when frozen. It doesn't stick to the cone as much.

Anyone with carpal tunnel will sing the praises of this device.

    Kyocera Adjustable Mandolin Slicer, Red

    by Kyocera (CSN-202-RD)

    $24.95 $22.96
  • The Kyocera ceramic adjustable mandoline slicer is a nice compact way to slice vegetables
  • The ceramic blade will stay sharp many times longer than a metal blade
  • Slicer cuts quickly and efficiently due to its sharp blade
  • Just turn the dial to adjust the thickness 5mm, 1.3mm, 2mm and 3mm and includes a hand guard
  • Safe to use in dishwasher
  • customer review: Your first few experiences with this tool are likely to be delightful. It features a ceramic blade, which is much, much sharper than the machined steel blades found on most mandolins. It is small and light, making it quick and easy to use and clean. Adjustment is accomplished simply by rotating a rectangular piece of plastic on the underside of the tool to one of four positions.

Unfortunately, the faults in this tool will soon become manifest.

First of all, as many reviewers have said, it is dangerous. The guard that comes with it is worthless and it's difficult to imagine a guard for any hand-held mandolin being of much use; such a guard is, by necessity, too small and not held in a fixed line of movement relative to the blade. Second, this tool is dangerous even when not in use: there is nothing supplied to cover the blade when it is not in use, so if you have a drawer full of kitchen tools in which you dig to find things, your fingers will eventually meet the blade.

Second, there are only four thickness settings (3.0mm, 2.0mm, 1.3mm, and 0.5mm). This is somewhat limiting. That the thinnest setting is 0.5mm is especially disappointing: Be aware that 0.5mm is substantially thicker than "paper-thin," so if that's what you are buying a mandolin to do, do not buy this one.

Third, it is flimsy. Because it is constructed entirely of plastic, it bends while you use it. This is especially bothersome for the thinnest setting. When cutting thin slices, if the plane of the deck on which the food slides is not perfectly parallel with the plane in which the blade sits, you will end up slicing only part of the food, with your slice tapering out into paper-thin-ness and then into nothing. Cutting fibrous or dense foods is difficult at any thickness due to the flimsiness.

Finally, the blade, so sharp when new, dulled to the point of near inutility after slicing two bulbs of fennel and a bulb of celery root. The blade is neither replaceable nor even removable for sharpening, so as soon as the blade dulls, the entire tool is trash.

In summary, there is little or nothing that I can do with this tool that I cannot do as well with a knife and the knife is less dangerous.

Leifheit Pro Line Stainless Steel Apple Slicer/Corer

    by Leifheit (36801)

    $14.95 $13.99
  • Sturdy tool
  • Cuts twelve evenly shaped pieces
  • Extremely sharp blades
  • Stainless steel construction
  • Dishwasher safe
  • customer review: I bought this to replace a deteriorating plastic-framed Oxo. I like getting twelve slices instead of eight. I like the all-metal design.

However the coring center should be a larger diameter. I frequently have to trim the seeds from larger apples.

Also the blade needs better sharpening and tapering. The Oxo had a better blade design; the radial blades were spot-welded to the core and then sharpened as one unit. But this Leifheit has tabs fastening the radial blades to the center. Those tabs create friction and catch a lot of apple fiber that has to be scrubbed out. A taller blade would also help stability as the blade is pushed down.

I would buy the Leifheit again, but we still find the Oxo easier to push.

End Grain Cheese Slicer BB 120

    by Prodyne (BB-120)

    $18.95
  • Natural wood finish board
  • Cuts a perect slice everytime
  • Replaceable stainless steel wire
  • Lifetime warranty against wire breakage
  • 9 1/2" x 6 " x 3/4"
  • customer review: I'm very pleased with this slicer. It's not overly large, but certainly big enough to tackle most of the cheese slicing tasks I encounter. It got quite the workout over the holidays when my family, serious cheese-lovers all, descended for a visit. This little unit held up beautifully, showing no signs of wear and tear.

Be sure to read the enclosed instructions -- the slicer is shipped with the slicer mechanism a little off-center. You need to pull the handle out about 1/2" in order to line up the cutting wire with the slot. After that, it's fine, but don't try to slice cheese with this until you've made that adjustemnt or you could break the wire. The instructions explain what you need to do.

In my opinion, this is the closest thing to a perfect cheese slicer that I've found.

    Toastmaster 6102 Electric Knife

    by Toastmaster (345911)

    $19.99 $12.28
  • Comfort grip handle
  • Stainless steel blades
  • customer review: The Toastmaster electric knife is great, especially for adults with small hands. Most of the current models of other electric knives don't have a handle to grasp; and because the outside of the knife is smooth, it is quite slippery. Thus, it is difficult to grasp the knife. The Toastmaster's handle makes for easy holding during use.

However, all the manufacturers would be wise to lengthen the knives to the size they were decades ago and charge a few more bucks.

This is the biggest drawback of the Toastmaster -- it's blades are shorter than other models.
