  • customer review: I bought a shun chef's knife before and had been using it with great pleasure. I liked it so much I used for everything - great until I tried to peel a tomato with an 8" chef knife. Bad idea. So with a paper towel wrapped around the small cut on my thumb I sat down and ordered this little paring knife.

The folded steel is very attractive and has just as many folds (albeit very tiny folds) as the larger knives. I love the "D" shape of the handle - it is very easy for me to hold onto. The light brushed texture runs around the handle giving extra grip, even when it is wet. The light-weight knife is quite balanced. It just feels good in my hand.

My only complaint is that it doesn't stay as sharp as my shun chef's knife (which probably gets more use). I use a small pull-through honer each time a use either knife and can feel the rough spots on this paring knife more than on the larger knife. Seems that the edge is a little more delicate on the smaller knife. A few pulls through the honer and it is good as new though. I still think it will be a while before I have to take it to be professionally sharpened.

I like the knife a lot. Between this paring knife and the chef's knife, I hardly use any of my other knives. Love the sharpness and construction of the Shun knives.

  • High-carbon stainless-steel blade ice-hardened for superior strength
  • Sturdy, black molded polypropylene handle
  • Safe to use in dishwasher
  • Comes with a lifetime warranty
  • customer review: I didn't think I'd ever again buy a German or French made kitchen knife: too heavy, too thick compared to Japanese knives. The reviews suggested that this knife was well made with a thinner blade and it was half the price of the next closest Japanese knife. Worth a try. Very nice knife. Light, sharp, good in the hand, and easy to clean. Initial very sharp edge has stayed sharp a long time where the French blade it replaced would have had to have been sharpened at least twice. Worth the money.

  • customer review: I purchased this knife from Macy's and initially, was very happy. This knife just feels perfect in your hand, has great balance, and very sharp. Unfortunately, sometimes I don't immediately clean my knives right when I'm done, and I have to either scrub or soak them later.

Because this states on the box it's "dishwasher safe," and the fact that it is a "professional" knife, I assumed it would be okay to soak in a sink with warm soapy water. I did this a few times, and one night I forgot it in the sink overnight; the next day I noticed two of the three rivets were severely corroded on both sides. I don't know what type of metal they use for the rivets, but the knife was ruined. I could take my fingernail and pull flakes of metal from the rivets.

I contacted Wusthof customer service via email (twice) and after a few weeks got a response. Even though I didn't actually put this knife in the dishwasher, they said it was "dishwasher safe" but NOT "dishwasher proof," and depending on the hardness of my water and/or detergent, it's not uncommon to see corroded rivets and also rust! Ouch! They said this has to do with the high carbon content of the blade.

I have a quality LamsonSharp forged knife with nickel silver rivets, and have no problems soaking it in warm soapy water for extended periods. The LamsonSharp is made in the US, but uses the same high carbon steel from Solingen, Germany. So I don't know why the Wusthof corroded? Maybe they use a cheaper metal in the rivets? I really don't know.

Anyway, Macy's didn't give me any run-around and promptly replaced the Wusthof with a new one, so I'm happy, but I'm going to be very careful with the new one and keep it dry. However, next time I buy a premium knife, I probably will not go with Wusthof.

Chicago Cutlery 4-Piece Paring/Utility Knife Set with Colored Handles

  • customer review: I picked these knives up really cheap (about 3 bucks), just to throw in my utensil drawer in case I ever needed an extra for something. The colors are appealing, but that's about all I can say for them. They have large handles, knives are dull, and it looks like they are not put together very well. These are dollar store quality knives.

  • Hand washing recommended
  • Dishwasher-safe, but hand washing recommended
  • customer review: I bought this knife set mostly because i needed a paring knife. I also wanted the Wusthof brand since all of my other knives are that brand and have proved to be of superb quality.
The price is what attracted me to this set. I figured it would be better to get more knives for this price rather than one paring knife for about the same price. At first, wasn't convinced that I would use the other two knives with the set until I received them. Now i use the other two more than I use the paring knife. I use the curved knife for boning chicken theighs and for cutting the joints when I'm carving a whole chicken. Its the perfect size. The other utility knife I use for small cutting jobs like cutting a small piece of cheese for a snack or cutting the ends off of an apple, peeling an orange, or even cubing other veggies. These knives are very sharp and don't lose their edge easy. They are also very easy to sharpen. I recommend these to anyone!

  • customer review: I have owned knives with riveted handles for as far back as I can remember. While they are fine for Chefs Knives and Utility Knives, I have never liked their bulky feel for paring knives. After using some "As Seen On TV" knife with a similar ergonomic handle I was hooked on the feel and decided to purchase some new paring knives.

My only complaint would have to that the edge, right out of box, felt a little rough. They cut well enough, but on tougher foods I felt it was grabbing a bit too much. Five minutes on the Lansky Universal Sharpening System quickly corrected that, though.

They may not be the best knives you have ever used, but for the price I could hardly ask for more. I certainly don't foresee replacing them anytime soon.
